How a Polygraph Examination Works
Initial Consultation
15-20 minutesCall us at 800-662-1571. We'll discuss your situation privately, explain the process, and help you determine if a polygraph is the right choice. This conversation is confidential and no-obligation.
Schedule the Examination
VariesWe'll book a time at our private office or, if needed, arrange a neutral location. You'll receive preparation guidance for your partner. Same-day and next-day appointments are often available.
Pre-Test Interview
30-45 minutesThe examiner meets privately with the person being tested to review questions, explain the process, and establish baseline responses. This ensures questions are clear and eliminates surprises.
Polygraph Test
1.5-2 hours totalSensors are attached to monitor breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and electrodermal activity (the electrical conductance of the skin measured at the fingertips). Questions are asked in a controlled format. The actual testing takes 15-30 minutes, but the full exam session lasts longer.
Analysis and Results
Same day verbal, 24hr reportThe examiner analyzes the data and provides results—typically Deception Indicated (DI), No Deception Indicated (NDI), or Inconclusive. You receive a detailed written report within 24 hours.
How to Prepare
For the Person Requesting the Test
- Write down specific questions you need answered
- Have dates, names, or details ready to discuss with the examiner
- Consider how you'll present this to your partner—calm framing matters
- Think through what you'll do with both positive and negative results
For the Person Taking the Test
- Get a full night's sleep before the examination
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, or medications that affect heart rate for 4 hours prior
- Answer all questions truthfully and completely during pre-test interview
- Stay calm and cooperate fully—resistance or anxiety can affect results
Understanding Your Results
No Deception Indicated (NDI)
The data shows no significant physiological responses indicating deception. Your partner's answers appear truthful. This provides a foundation for rebuilding trust.
Deception Indicated (DI)
The data shows significant physiological responses consistent with deception. Your concerns appear valid. You now have information to make informed decisions about your next steps.
Inconclusive
The data doesn't clearly indicate deception or truthfulness. This can happen due to anxiety, medical conditions, or other factors. We can discuss retesting or alternative approaches.
What Results Don't Tell You
- •Polygraphs detect deception, not guilt. Someone can be truthful about specific questions but still hide other things.
- •Results don't tell you how to fix your relationship—that requires communication and often counseling.
- •No test is 100% accurate. Results should inform decisions but not be the sole basis for major life choices.
What Others Have Experienced
"The polygraph cleared my name. My ex accused me of infidelity during our custody battle. The examination results showed I was telling the truth, and the judge took notice. I kept my custody rights."
James P.
Polygraph Examination
"We're rebuilding our marriage after my husband's affair. Quarterly polygraph check-ins give me the reassurance I need to continue healing. It's not forever, but it's what we need right now."
